The Get Down Trailer: Baz Luhrmann’s Netflix Show Has a Heart As Big As Its Afros

The Get Down, Baz Luhrmann’s Netflix series about the birth of hip-hop in the Bronx, has another trailer to get you grooving before the first six episodes drop August 12. The show stars Justice Smith as Ezekiel, the poet-in-residence, and Herizen Guardiola as Mylene, the diva-in-training — just two high schoolers on the cusp of discovering hip-hop with the guidance of Grandmaster Flash in the late 1970s. (Jaden Smith and Dope’s Shameik Moore also star as members of the crew.) It’s practically the antithesis of Martin Scorsese’s short-lived Vinyl! You’ll see tons of gorgeous Afros, soaring musical performances (Herizen, you better sang!), and a sobering depiction of inner-city life in the Bronx in the ‘70s. The latest trailer is above, with the first sizzle reel that debuted earlier this year, below.
