What’s Leaving Showtime: February 2016

Each month, several films and TV shows leave Showtime’s streaming catalogue. We provide a list of titles leaving the platform, along with a selection of titles that may interest you. For more comprehensive coverage of the best titles streaming via Showtime and beyond, check out Vulture’s Streaming Hub, which is updated throughout the month.

I can spend my whole life: Good Will Hunting (1997)

My personal theory is that Good Will Hunting is the Man Without a Country of streaming titles (it’s been on and off Netflix, HBO, and even Amazon recently) — it’s always a solid addition to a catalogue, but it swears allegiance to no single service. Anyway, Good Will Hunting is leaving Showtime’s streaming offerings this February, so drop in to hang out with Matt, Ben, Robin Williams, and Minnie Driver before you find it at its next port of call. Driver, especially, deserves more credit than she usually gets in this.

Stream with fava beans and a nice Chianti: The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins face off in Jonathan Demme’s 1991 thriller. There are other, darker takes on Hannibal Lecter, but The Silence of the Lambs is perhaps the best first introduction to the psychopath doctor from Thomas Harris’s novels. Afterwars, sample Michael Mann’s Manhunter and, of course, Bryan Fuller’s gorgeous TV adaptation, Hannibal.

Come hang out: Dave Chappelle’s Block Party (2005)

Part sketch comedy, part stand-up, part old-fashioned variety show, Block Party follows Dave Chappelle as he puts together a show in Brooklyn featuring the likes of Kanye West and Erykah Badu. Though he lay low for nearly a decade before returning to the stage in recent years, Chappelle hasn’t come close to his form here in Block Party. He was at the height of his prominence but still happy to just hang out with his pals.
