Captain America: Civil War is already more crowded than your standard Republican primary, with a cast of heroes that includes Iron Man, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Falcon, Bucky Barnes, Scarlet Witch, possibly Spider-Man, and, of course, Captain America. The Hulk, the Michael Bloomberg of the Marvel universe, appeared to be sitting this one out — but now we might have to brace for a big, green surprise entrance. In an interview with BBC1, Anthony Mackie hinted that Ruffalo was back for the film, saying, “I feel like the story is very concise and interesting, and you get to see Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson and Mark Ruffalo and everybody just do really, really good acting.” This doesn’t square with earlier comments from the Spotlight star, who claimed his character “was inserted into the script, but it was later removed” last fall, but it could be a sign that some classic Marvel mind-games are afoot. Ruffalo’s next big superhero film is supposed to be Thor: Ragnarok, a buddy movie with Thor, but who knows, maybe the Oscar nominee will come crashing back into our lives a little earlier.
