On Sunday night’s season-five premiere of Girls, it was revealed that Marnie’s now-husband Desi (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) had been engaged on seven previous occasions. When Vulture ran into Moss-Bachrach at a screening of Terrence Malick’s Knight of Cups at the not-yet-opened Metrograph in New York, he revealed a moment that had been cut from the season-five premiere: details about the identities of Desi’s ex-fiancées. “They had a great list,” he said. “They named a bunch of the women that Desi had been engaged to, a really impressive list.” One of the names, of course, was his previous girlfriend, Clementine. But more unexpectedly, it included Zoë Kravitz as the girl who got away. “I’m not sure what happened there,” Moss-Bachrach laughed. “What’s the backstory? Did he break it off? Did she? I’m not sure. I’ll have to think about it.”
Marnie doesn’t know yet about all the other women, and she may never know. But does it matter? Moss-Bachrach, while being careful to not give away how long this marriage will last, thinks Desi’s heart is in the right place, at least for now. “I think this one is different for him. Just to get really pretentious, what was it Shakespeare said about lovers’ promises? How absolutely they evaporate? But I think he really loves her.”
