Do you hear that? That’s the sound of freedom ringing. Captain America: Civil War, which doesn’t open stateside for three more days, brought democracy and the #AmericanWay to foreign lands this weekend, sticking a flag in a $200 million gross. That’s the 14th-best foreign opening for an American film ever. Domestically, The Jungle Book, which takes place in the Seoni, Madhya Pradesh jungle (which is not in America), came out on top, clawing its way to another $42.4 million, for a three-week $252 million cume. Roar!
The rest of the weekend box office was less impressive. The Huntsman: Winter’s War, which stars Chris Hemsworth and, for about ten minutes, a well-paid Charlize Theron, continued to under-perform, managing just $9.3 million for a two-week total of $33.9 million on a $115 million budget. The $15 million Keanu, in which Key and Peele try to rescue a cat named Keanu who is voiced, of course, by Keanu Reeves (how many other Keanus can you name?), also made $9.3 million. Mother’s Day, the latest in the movies-named-after-arbitrary-holidays series that also includes Valentine’s Day, New Year’s Eve, and Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving (just kidding), had an $8.3 million debut.
