Like Any Encouraging Friend Would, Beyoncé Told Serena Williams to ‘Just Dance’ for Her Lemonade Cameo

Tennis all-star Serena Williams slayed her cameo in Beyoncé’s visual album for Lemonade, where she showed up and danced alongside Bey for the track “Sorry.” (Yup, the one with “Becky with the good hair.”) As with the rest of Lemonade’s production, Williams’s appearance was kept under immense secrecy, but she’s now revealing how exactly her brief cameo came to be. “I have known the director since I was like nine years old,” she said, according to the New York Times. “I know Beyoncé pretty well, so they were like, we would love for you to be in this particular song. It’s about strength and it’s about courage and that’s what we see you as.”

When it came time to actually film the video, the behind-the-scenes dynamic was pretty chill, with a few understandable jitters. “She told me that she just wants me to dance, like just be really free and just dance like nobody’s looking and go all out,” she continued. “So that wasn’t easy in the beginning, but then it got easier … I thought that particular song on the visual album was really a strong song, and it was also really fun at the same time.” We couldn’t agree more.
