Continuing its trend in green-lighting shows with strong female leads, Hulu has made a straight-to-series order for Harlots, starring Samantha Morton, Lesley Manville, and Jessica Brown Findlay. The eight-part family drama, set in 18th-century Georgian London and based on true stories, offers a fresh take on sex during the time period. The series follows an enterprising woman (Morton) and her daughters (Findlay, the eldest, a coveted courtesan coming to terms with her position in society) as she struggles to balance her roles as a mother and a brothel owner, only for her business to come under attack from a ruthless rival madam (Manville). Moira Buffini (Jane Eyre) has penned the series, based upon an original idea by Buffini and Alison Newman, and it’s set to begin filming in London in June. Imagine what the corset budget is!
