What’s Leaving HBO: June 2016

Photo: Paramount Pictures

Each month, several films and TV shows leave HBO’s catalogue. We provide a list of departing titles so you can watch them before they’re gone forever (or are just available on a different site). Consider it a Memorial Day weekend to-do list. For more comprehensive coverage of the best titles available on HBO and elsewhere, check out Vulture’s What to Stream Now hub, which is updated throughout the month.

For a viewer with unconventional tastes: Fifty Shades of Grey (2015)

Sure, you’ve made jokes about Fifty Shades of Grey, but is it really as bad as you think? (It isn’t.) As the young ingénue Anastasia Steele, Dakota Johnson proves she can carry a shaky script. As the brooding Christian Grey, Jamie Dornan mostly proves that, yes, he is pretty good to look at. Leaving June 30.

If you want the Godfather theme stuck in your head: The Godfather Epic

First added to HBO back in January, The Godfather Epic combines Francis Ford Coppola’s Godfather movies (plus the occasional deleted scene) together into a single, chronological unit. The seven-hour cut is more of a thought experiment and test of stamina than a cohesive film, but it’s an engaging experiment nonetheless. Leaving June 30.

How to be a gentleman: Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014)

Matthew Vaughn’s celebration of violence, beefcakes, and British manners is getting an even beefcakier (beefiercake?) sequel in the near future, which means it’s a good time to revisit the original. Sure, there’s a lot of blood splatter, but it all underlies a critique of classism and pretension — or something, it’s hard to tell through all the violence. Leaving June 30.

Cinderella-ish: Pretty in Pink (1986)

The outcast (Molly Ringwald) pines after one of popular kids (Andrew McCarthy), while her best friend (John Cryer) pines after her. You might expect the movie to resolve the love triangle by putting Ringwald and Cryer together, but — spoiler alert — it doesn’t. That’s a little cynical, and cruel to the Cryers of the world, but like many John Hughes movies, it feels murky and honest about teenage emotions in a way most high-school movies don’t. Leaving June 30.

Glamping: Troop Beverly Hills (1989)

Long before Melissa McCarthy had a team of Girl Scouts doing her bidding, Shelly Long had a troop of her own. Troop Beverly Hills doesn’t go much further than the one central joke about a rich woman having to go outside, but still, it’s exuberant enough to make that one joke (mostly) work. Leaving June 30.
