Samantha Bee Explains How Republicans Weren’t Always Puppets of the NRA on ‘Full Frontal’

Here’s a great segment from last night’s Full Frontal, where Samantha Bee covers last week’s 15-hour filibuster by the Democrats in an attempt to pass gun control measures – a filibuster we now know resulted in the Senate accomplishing nothing by rejecting four proposed measures thanks to the Republicans’ ties with the NRA. But as Bee points out, the Republicans weren’t always puppets bought out by the NRA: George H. W. Bush publicly quit the NRA over their “hateful paranoid rhetoric,” Supreme Court Justice Warren Burger called the Second Amendment “one of the greatest pieces of fraud on the American public by special interest groups that I have ever seen in my lifetime,” and Ronald Reagan banned open carry in California and supported the Brady Bill in 1991. “There’s nothing like getting shot to put you on the side of gun control,” Bee says. “So at this rate, most Americans will come around in the next year or two.”

Unfortunately, the NRA’s influence over the Republicans is now stronger than ever – so strong that instead of acknowledging that the cause of all the tragic mass shootings is guns, they’re going with the “political correctness” excuse. “Oh yes, the deadly PC-15 Political Corrector! Unmodified, it can fire 45 safe spaces a minute. Luckily it only hurts straw men.”
