What’s New on Amazon: July 2016

Bon appetit! Photo: Sophie Giraud/NBC

At the beginning of (and throughout) every month, Amazon Prime and Amazon Instant Video add new movies and TV shows to their libraries. Some of these may also have previously been on Amazon, only to have been removed and then added back. For more comprehensive coverage of the best titles available on Amazon and elsewhere, check out Vulture’s What to Stream Now hub, which is updated throughout the month.

Be his guest: Hannibal (Season 3)

The third and final season of Bryan Fuller’s psychedelic take on Hannibal Lecter splits into two parts, following the cannibal doctor’s flight to Italy, and later, the story of the Red Dragon, based on Thomas Harris’s novel of the same name. As always, the series is a feast for the eyes and ears, a love story that changed the way people tell stories on TV. Available July 5.

Sweet revenge: Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003), Kill Bill: Volume 2 (2004)

Quentin Tarantino put everything from anime to Blaxploitation in a blender to make his two-part revenge epic, which stars Uma Thurman as the avenging Bride, with Vivica Fox, Daryl Hannah, Lucy Liu, and David Carradine among the cast of enemies. There’s blood everywhere, especially in the Volume 1’s climactic swordfight, but, man, the splatter is gorgeous. Available July 1.

Get some space: Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979), Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982), Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984), Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989), Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991), Star Trek IX: Insurrection (1998)

Just after Netflix lost most of the Star Trek films from its catalogue, Amazon and Hulu are picking up nearly all of them. Sorry, fans of Generations and First Contact, you’re not going to find your TNG movies here, but you can check out all the installments from the original series, because William Shatner’s here to stay. Available July 1.

A for apocalypse: Z for Zachariah (2015)

Chris Pine, Margot Robbie, and Chiwetel Ejiofor all take a break from their comic-book-movie obligations for Craig Zobel’s spare Sundance drama. Robbie plays a nuclear apocalypse survivor who is the only woman in what's left of her town, while Pine and Ejiofor are her competing suitors. Think Fox’s The Last Man on Earth, but really dark. Available July 23.

Elementary: Mr. Holmes (2015)

Sir Ian McKellen is an aging Sherlock Homes who’s trying to solve one last mystery, though it's dependent on whether he can only get his memory to work, and if there was any mystery in the first place. The film plays like an extended Masterpiece Mystery, small and subtle as it is, but it’s held together by McKellen’s deft performance. Available July 30.
