Crime and Punishment: The Night Of
HBO’s latest limited series is a dark procedural about a single case working its way through the New York legal system. It’s based on the British series Criminal Justice, and written by Richard Price (The Wire). Your enthusiasm will largely depend on your taste for thorny, morally complex legal drama. But if that’s your thing, The Night Of is a Kafkaesque doozy. Series Premiere July 10.
You’ll be back: Looking: The Movie
The short-lived dramedy about gay men in San Francisco returns from the dead for a wrap-up movie. Looking was at its best when it spun small, quiet, and contained tales, which are perhaps a better fit for film than television. So the combination of Andrew Haigh’s track record with Weekend and 45 Years and Jonathan Groff’s new haircut are setting our expectations very high. Premieres July 23.
The reign of Damon: The Bourne Ultimatum (2007)
Did you worry that there’d be a time when Bourne movies weren’t playing on repeat on HBO? Fear not! Matt Damon is here to help — and he also has another Bourne in the works to make sure that well never runs dry. (Pay no attention to Jeremy Renner’s The Bourne Legacy, which is not currently streaming on any major service.) Available July 1.
Citizen-Thor: Blackhat (2015)
Meanwhile, Chris Hemsworth gives his best audition for a Bourne-action movie in Michael Mann’s divisive techno-thriller. Do you want your chase sequences spiked with existential despair? Do you believe that Thor knows how to operate a computer? Here’s a hacker movie for you. Available July 3.
Express yourself: Straight Outta Compton (2015)
This Ice Cube–produced history of N.W.A. ran away with the box office, and even managed to nab an Oscar nomination. If you weren’t among the crowds seeing the movie in theaters, brush up now, and get to know O’Shea Jackson Jr. (a dead ringer for his father, Ice Cube) and Corey Hawkins (your new Jack Bauer). Available July 16.
