Has Canada finally turned on two of its greatest exports in years, Justin Bieber and Drake? Probably not, but hey, at least Carly Rae Jepsen has finally been vindicated. Years ago, Jepsen released the greatest song of the decade, only to then be totally ignored by the prestigious Polaris Music Prize, Canada’s biggest music-award ceremony, next to the Junos (where Carly has been well-loved). At long last, the drought is over: She’s been named to this year’s short list, for her pop opus Emotion, as have Grimes, Kaytranada, White Lung, PUP, Jessy Lanza, Black Mountain, Basia Bulat, Andy Shauf, and U.S. Girls. Notice any hugely popular names missing there? Yep, after making the initial long list, Drake, Bieber, and even Tthe Weeknd were all snubbed in the end. Justice for Jepsen! The winner will be announced September 19.
