There’s more marijuana-centric prestige TV coming to a screen near you. Emily Brady’s best-selling book, Humboldt: Life on America’s Marijuana Frontier, is being developed by Anonymous Content — better known as the studio that brought us Mr. Robot and True Detective — and its found a star in John Malkovich. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Malkovich will play the patriarch of a family in Humboldt, California, that’s earned its money for decades by harvesting and selling marijuana in a town made famous by the trade. For her book, Brady embedded herself with the community for a year, and wrote about Humboldt’s long history in the weed business and how it was being affected by the legalization of the drug. Several “pot comedies” are on the horizon — like Disjointed at Netflix, Highland at Amazon, High Maintenance at HBO, and Buds at NBC — but Humboldt will take a dramatic approach to the topic with Love and Mercy writer Michael A. Lerner onboard to write the script.
