Larry Wilmore on Alton Sterling’s Death: ‘The Punishment for Being a Black Man Shouldn’t Be Death’

By

On The Nightly Show, Larry Wilmore devoted a segment to the shooting of Alton Sterling, who was killed by police officers in the parking lot of a convenience store in Baton Rouge. Wilmore was forceful in condemning the shooting, pointing out that disparaging Sterling's character isn't relevant. "No matter what his crimes were, Alton Sterling did not deserve to be executed for it," said Wilmore. "The punishment for resisting arrest shouldn't be death. The punishment for selling bootleg CDs shouldn't be death. The punishment for carrying a gun in an open-carry state shouldn't be death. The punishment for being a black man shouldn't be death."
