In 1974, local Florida newscaster Christine Chubbuck committed suicide by shooting herself in the head on live television. Ever since then, she’s been an object of fascination for media historians and those who seek out the macabre. Her story caught the attention of documentary filmmaker Robert Greene and he set out to make a curious film that mixes elements of fiction and nonfiction in an effort to explore Chubbuck’s life, death, and afterlife. The resulting movie, Kate Plays Christine, made its debut at Sundance earlier this year, where it won massive acclaim. It stars actor Kate Lyn Sheil as she prepares to play Chubbuck in a reenactment of her final days and features extensive interviews with people who knew the late broadcaster. The film is being released in theaters on August 24, and we have the exclusive debut of the trailer and poster.
