Vimeo announced a brand new batch of upcoming Vimeo Originals today, including an anthology film co-created by and starring John Early and Kate Berlant (Netflix’s The Characters) and the first US standup special from South African comedian Loyiso Gola. Here’s more info on both projects:
555 (January 2017) Black Mirror meets Hollywood in the eerie, darkly hilarious film 555. This all-new anthology features five short movies set in the same otherworldly landscape, one that comes alive through the performances of rising comedy stars Kate Berlant and John Early (who created the film alongside 3-time Staff Picked filmmaker Andrew DeYoung). This stellar collection boasts gorgeous cinematography, and ultimately blurs the lines between comedy and utter nightmare. Loyiso Gola: Live in New York (November 2016) Two-time Emmy®-nominated comedian Loyiso Gola is well-known for his keen eye, outspokenness, and total fearlessness when it comes to challenging taboos — and he’s holding absolutely zero commentary back in his first U.S. comedy special. Hailing from South Africa, Loyiso’s been featured in the The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, and on-air in places like Comedy Central Africa and BBC’s Mock the Week (meaning, he’s kinda a big deal). Loyiso’s special weaves the intellectual and the hilarious together, taking us from sharp day-to-day observations to frank racial commentary and beyond. And some amazing women are behind this one: the incredible executive producer Trina DasGupta hails up the project, as well as her company Single Palm Tree Productions.
