Ava DuVernay Helped J.J. Abrams Fix a Key Force Awakens Lightsaber Battle

It might be a while before we get to see Ava DuVernay's A Wrinkle in Time, but it turns out that we've already seen some of her sci-fi expertise. In a commentary track from a collector's edition of The Force Awakens (via Yahoo), J.J. Abrams breaks down a key fight scene between Daisy Ridley's Rey and Adam Driver's Kylo Ren. As he reworked the scene in reshoots (a common Star Wars occurrence), Abrams asked DuVernay for help, and the Selma and Queen Sugar director suggested that Rey needs "one really cool moment." The result is a tense close-up, a character beat in the midst of the battle. Ava DuVernay can do whatever she wants, but if Disney hasn't already tried to get her on a Star Wars movie, it's certainly missing out.
