This morning, it was announced that Bob Dylan — prolific singer-songwriter and expert welder — was awarded the 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature for “having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition” with his 50-plus years of creative output. “Dylan has the status of an icon,” Sara Danius, the permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, said during announcement. “His influence on contemporary music is profound.” While some reacted with pure glee to Dylan’s feat, others expressed discontent at the fact that a musician prevailed above other established writers and novelists. Below, we’ve compiled social-media reactions to how celebrities and authors are taking the news.
