Barry Jenkins’s Moonlight is being pegged as a strong awards-season contender ahead of its release this weekend, and it isn’t hard to see why. The film, which follows the coming-of-age of a young, gay black man at three different points in his life, grapples with complex emotions in an intuitive and honest way, and features superb performances from three actors portraying the main character Chiron, Naomie Harris as his mother, and Mahershala Ali as the closest thing he has to a father figure.
