Nate Parker, who has become embroiled in controversy surrounding his 1999 rape allegations in the run-up to the release of his Nat Turner film The Birth of a Nation, is getting the chance to tell the story of Turner's 1831 slave rebellion in documentary form as well. This Friday at 10 p.m., National Geographic will air Rise Up: The Legacy of Nat Turner, a one-hour television special executive-produced by Parker. Roger Guenveur Smith, who appears in Birth of a Nation, will host Rise Up, which will focus on the history of slavery in Virginia and explore the context and consequences of Turner's revolt. Birth of the Nation also opens in theaters this Friday.
