The lawyers for Serial subject Adnan Syed are seeking to have his murder conviction thrown out. In a new motion filed on Monday, they have requested that Syed, who was convicted in 2000 for the murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee, be freed on bail. “Syed has now served more than 17 years in prison based on an unconstitutional conviction for a crime he did not commit,” they write. “He has no history of violence other than the state’s allegations in this case, and if released, he would pose no danger to the community.” In June, a Maryland judge granted Syed a new trial after international attention to the case sparked by Sarah Koenig’s ubiquitous podcast helped uncover new questions about Asia McClain’s potential alibi for Syed and the prosecution’s cell-phone location data.
