Tom Hardy Will Play a Legendary Antarctic Explorer in His Next Physically Extreme Role

When it comes to selecting roles, Tom Hardy has no time for your simple character dramas. The story of explorer Ernest Shackleton has, according to Deadline, previously been considered “too logistically difficult” to bring to screen, which makes it an ideal project for Hardy to breathe life into. Shackleton was a Brit who led multiple expeditions to the Antarctic in the early 1900s in order to become the first person to set foot on the South Pole. On the third trip, his ship (which was so perfectly called Endurance) got trapped in the ice, forcing Shackleton and his crew to make camp on a sheet of frozen water. As the Endurance sank, the adventurer and his men had to survive the goddamn Antarctic and find their way back to civilization. We won’t spoil the rest of the story if you haven’t been keeping up on your history about the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration, but honestly, does this not sound like the perfect role for a man who spent much of Mad Max: Fury Road strapped to the front of a speeding car in a post-civilization wasteland?
