John Oliver Calls Himself Out for Encouraging Trump to Run for President: ‘I’m an Idiot’

Here’s a clip from last night’s Last Week Tonight, where John Oliver comes clean about a moment during his short stint as Daily Show host in 2013 he’s not proud of today. “It is frankly hard to believe that there was a time when people thought a Trump candidacy would be funny. But there was such a time,” he admits before replaying the Daily Show clip of him encouraging Donald Trump’s presidential run. “Now, in my defense, I have no defense for that and was hoping to think of one before finishing this sentence which, oh shit, it’s over,” Oliver says before showing another old Daily Show clip of him saying that the Chicago Cubs will never win the World Series. “I’m an idiot. But that clearly shows no outcome is certain, so if you are thinking you don’t have to show up to vote on Tuesday because there is no way the impossible could happen, take it from somebody who has learned from painful experience: You are wrong about that.”
