Watch Adam Driver, Andrew Garfield, and Liam Neeson in Trailer for Martin Scorsese’s Silence

In the first trailer for Martin Scorsese’s Silence, life for Jesuit priests in 17th-century Japan isn’t all praying and missionary work — it’s also includes terrifying crucifixions by the sea. Based on  Shūsaku Endō’s 1966 historical novel about early Japanese Christians and missionaries, the story follows two young priests (Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver, who were very serious about researching their roles) as they travel to Japan to find their mentor, played by Liam Neeson, who has left the religion. While the trailer doesn’t give away many specifics beyond that, based on the abundant trembling looks given by both the priests and their followers in the village, we assume Garfield and Driver would have been better off if Neeson was the one trying to save and recover them.
