Atlanta’s Lakeith Stanfield Brought Some Kanye-Like Antics to the Critics’ Choice Awards

When Silicon Valley won the Critics’ Choice Award for Best Comedy Series on Sunday night, the first person to accept the honor was not executive producer Tom Lassally, but instead an actor from an entirely separate critically acclaimed series Atlanta, Lakeith Stanfield. Wearing a sailor cap and taking the stage in a brisk sweep, Stanfield said into the microphone, “I want to thank everybody for honoring us in this way. We worked very hard on Silicon Valley and here we are. Thank you.” Perhaps it was because he refrained from saying “I’ma let you finish,” or maybe it was just Stanfield’s disarming laid-back charm, but Lassally took the interruption much more kindly than a certain Taylor Swift took Kanye West’s similar surprise appearance. With a big smile, and an award in hand, Lassally started his speech, “I have no idea who that was.” Don’t worry too much about Atlanta, 2016’s best show, though, the series’ star and creator Donald Glover won the Best Actor in a Comedy Series award.
