Denzel Washington Discusses Diversity, Says the Oscars Are Unfair

Denzel Washington says he doesn’t spend a lot of time thinking about #OscarsSoWhite and the Academy’s overwhelming homogeneity. But even if he’s not caught up in buzzwords, the Fences star told 60 Minutes that he’s lived with the industry’s whiteness for a long time. “I’ve been the guy at the Oscars without my name being called, when my name is called, [and] when everybody thought they were going to call my name and they didn’t,” Washington said. When asked about the unfairness of the Academy’s process and composition, Washington said he won’t let it stop him: “If you’re looking for an excuse, you’ll find one … Can’t live like that. Just do the best you can do.” Easy advice from a guy who already has two Oscars.
