This seems about right. The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Sam Esmail — the maestro behind Mr. Robot — will be adapting Fritz Lang’s seminal German expressionist film Metropolis into a miniseries. Esmail will serve as an executive producer, although his exact role beyond that is still being negotiated, with the expected launch date at a yet-undisclosed network to be in about two or three years. The epic sci-fi drama was helmed by Fritz Lang and released in 1927, and the description of Esmail’s big-budget (reportedly $10 million per episode!) adaptation aligns closely with Lang’s original: “Like the original film, the small-screen adaptation will take place in a future society where wealthy industrialists rule the vast city from high-rise tower complexes, while a lower class of underground-dwelling workers toil constantly to operate the machines that provide its power. Risking everything they know, two star crossed lovers from opposite sides of the divide must find a way to bring down the whole system.” Sehr gut!
