Welcome to The Second City Archives, in which we post an exclusive clip each week of some of comedy’s biggest superstars performing early in their careers on the legendary Chicago stage. Second City has generously given us a glimpse into their extensive archive of live performances, and over the coming weeks we’ll be sharing some rare and retro comedy never before seen on the web.
It’s been an interesting week, to say the least, for Katie Rich, who was “indefinitely” suspended by SNL on Monday for tweeting a joke referencing Donald Trump’s son then showered with support by fellow comedians and writers online and even offered a job by Dan Harmon. In light of all this, Second City sent us a clip starring Rich this week from the 2012 revue Who Do We Think We Are?, which also featured ensemble performers Tim Baltz, Edgar Blackmon, Holly Laurent, Mary Sohn, Steve Waltien. In the scene, Rich turns the audience’s scene suggestions into a bidding war (“We have a six-dollar investment for cats and butts. Does anybody have more than six dollars?”), which results in a scene inspired by tax cuts for a whopping $40: “You have all now voted the way that we really do vote in this country.” Make sure you don’t miss Rich’s closing line at the very end.
