Standing Rock has found its “We Are the World” in a cover version of Cris Williamson’s “Midnight Oil.” Singer-songwriter Holly Miranda spearheaded and takes lead on the new version of the song, which gets help from the likes of Ani DiFranco, SNL’s Sasheer Zamata, Parks and Recreation’s Natalie Morales, Jaime King, and the 28-person New Asylum Choir. “Midnight Oil” dropped Wednesday, the same day that a deadline to evacuate a camp site near the Dakota Access Pipeline passed, leading to multiple arrests of protesters who refused to leave. Of the song’s release, Miranda said, “The women of Standing Rock are leading the last action placing themselves in harm’s way in order to protect our water and their treaty territory. These water protectors will face arrest, police brutality, federal charges, prison time, and hefty legal fees. Now more than ever they need our help, our voices and our attention.” All proceeds from “Midnight Oil” will go to the continued fight.
