Katy Perry has released her new single “Chained to the Rhythm,” and it’s a bid to be the “Turn the Beat Around” of our time if ever there were one. The dance song, which will make you hurt acutely for Glee’s missed opportunity, is Perry’s first new work since releasing “Rise” this summer. It features Skip Marley (son to Bob) and was co-written by Sia, per universal law. The lyric video for “Chained to the Rhythm” is arguably more interesting than the song itself, featuring a giant hand preparing a meal in a miniature kitchen, while a hamster, the recipient of the food and seeming homeowner, idly waits. But the song is about dance? Like, pretty much just dance, without much subtext? Keep a key nearby, and do your best interpretative work with “Chained to the Rhythm” below.
