The Mountain Goats goeth goth with their next album. The group is set to release Goths, their follow-up to 2015’s wrestling-centric Beat the Champ, in May. For now, the quartet has released the LP’s first single, called “Andrew Eldritch Is Moving Back to Leeds.” The title doesn’t lie, as the characteristically narrative song imagines the Sisters of Mercy front man returning to the site of the band’s formation. With Goths, the Mountain Goats plan to explore the titular disaffected social group from an adult perspective. Per bassist Peter Hughes, “While [frontman] John [Darnielle] writes the songs, as he always has, it feels more than ever like he’s speaking for all of us in the band, erstwhile goths (raises hand) or otherwise … these are songs that approach an identity most often associated with youth from a perspective that is inescapably adult.” May your struggle to avoid reading “The Mountain Goats” as “The Mountain Goths” (a Hot Topic T-shirt concept if ever there was) begin in earnest with a listen to “Andrew Eldritch Is Moving Back to Leeds” below.
