Say a silent prayer for the person who belittled Lorde and lived to tell the tale. She’s not angry or bitter. No, all that angst was released on her first new single “Green Light.” On her newest taste of her forthcoming album Melodrama (now officially out June 16), her emotions live up to the title. “Liability” is a classic story of the pressures of being a prodigy backfiring so greatly that they lead to a burnt-out 20-year-old convinced she’s already peaked. “The truth is I am a toy that people enjoy until all of the tricks don’t work anymore and then they’re bored of me,” she wails on this crushing piano ballad. Lorde tells Zane Lowe, who premiered it, that she came up with the song after “a moment of sadness in a cab listening to ‘Higher’ by Rihanna and I had a little cry.”
