Move over, Big Little Lies. THR reports that Kerry Washington is making a film out of Brit Bennett’s popular debut novel, The Mothers, which dominated bestseller lists when it was released last year. Set in a small Black community in suburban Southern California, the novel chronicles how one “big secret rocks the lives of several of its residents,” centering around a grief-stricken teen named Nadia, who begins a relationship with the local pastor’s older son and becomes pregnant. The subsequent cover-up of her pregnancy ends up having large ramifications as Nadia begins to grow up. Washington will serve as a producer — she’s been catching the producing bug lately — while Bennett herself is penning the script.
