True Detective was last on the air in 2015, and because you’re surely still wondering what Frank Semyon (Vince Vaughn) meant when he said, “Never do anything out of hunger, not even eating,” HBO is going to try and distract you from those thoughts with a third season of its anthology series. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show’s creator, Nic Pizzolatto, is working on a third season and David Milch has been brought in to collaborate with him. Milch has an odd history with the network, having produced the beloved but brief Deadwood; the very weird one-season wonder John From Cincinnati; and the short-lived Luck, a show about horse racing that had to be shut down because too many horses were being killed during filming. At last year’s summer TCA event, HBO head of programming Casey Bloys said the network is “open to someone else writing it with Nic producing,” so maybe by pairing Pizzolatto with another strong voice like Milch, the network is hoping to avoid bad guys saying lines like, “Thing is, you ain’t that thing no more. What you used to was.” Or maybe HBO just couldn’t let go of Pizzolatto’s original plan to make season two about “hard women, bad men and the secret occult history of the United States transportation system.” Time to deliver, Nic.
