HBO Is Developing a TV Adaptation of 1997’s ‘Wag the Dog’

HBO wants to turn the 1997 political satire Wag the Dog into a television series. According to The Hollywood Reporter, original director Barry Levinson is attached to adapt Wag the Dog for TV in the form of a half-hour comedy for the network, which is described as “an ode to the classic film, but moving the weapons of mass distraction beyond politics and into business, entertainment and, yes, nonprofits. In the 21st century with the tools of social media at their hands, nothing is off limits to a small group of operators when it comes to manufacturing reality. Fake news is so yesterday.” Playwright Rajiv Joseph (Nurse Jackie, Draft Day, Army of One) will write the script, political operative and Hillary Clinton supporter David Brock will serve as a consultant, and original Wag the Dog costar Robert De Niro is onboard as a producer.
