Seth Meyers Takes “A Closer Look” at Trump, Gianforte, and the GOP’s Hostility Towards Reporters

Here’s a clip from last night’s Late Night, where Seth Meyers takes “A Closer Look” at the news that Montana GOP congressional candidate Greg Gianforte body slammed a reporter earlier this week after he asked him a question about healthcare. While the Gianforte story sounds like an extreme case of a Republican politician avoiding a healthcare bill question, Meyers points out that it’s just one example in a larger pattern of hostility towards journalists and protesters that Donald Trump has been encouraging among Republicans and his supporters for a long time now. “Now, the polls closed in Montana tonight after we taped this segment, so we don’t know what will happen,” Meyers says, “but this kind of behavior is far beyond the bounds of what should be considered acceptable by anyone in either political party. And the toxic culture of hostility towards the free press that Trump has created needs to end too.” With that context, is it really surprising that Gianforte ended up winning Montana’s special election anyway?
