In an interview with BBC Radio 5, Alex Winter said he was sexually abused while a child actor in the 1970s by a man who is now dead. Winter, a star of Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and now a director, described the experience as “hellish,” saying that “I didn’t feel that I had any place of safety to unlock an extremely sensitive and potentially dangerous secret.” The experience left Winter with PTSD and he said, “It really wasn’t in my case, I would say, ’til well into my 30s, that I was really able to do heavy lifting on this.” Winter didn’t believe he would ever speak out about his experience to the public until the last year, after many in Hollywood came forward with stories of abuse at the hands of Harvey Weinstein and others. “So it’s going to take time, it’s going to take mental health work, it’s going to take the capacity of society to listen to some very unpleasant truths about itself,” he said. “And there’s no doubt that that’s going to take time.”
