Fresh Off the Boat’s Nahnatchka Khan Is Directing That Ali Wong–Randall Park Rom-Com

Our vision board.

A while back, Ali Wong mentioned that she talked with Randall Park about making a romantic comedy, and we at Vulture demanded that Hollywood make that movie. Now, Netflix is making it happen (you’re welcome). Back in August, the streaming service said it was making a rom-com based on a script the two actors and comedians wrote with Michael Golamco. The story follows “two childhood friends who find themselves in vastly different socioeconomic situations when they fall in love as adults.” How delightfully rom-commy!

Today, Variety reports that Fresh Off the Boat showrunner Nahnatchka Khan will direct the movie in question, making it her feature film debut (she’s previously directed episodes of Fresh Off the Boat and Don’t Trust the B in Apartment 23). We also have a little more detail on the script: “Sasha, now a celebrity chef opening a restaurant in San Francisco, runs into Marcus, a happily struggling musician still living at home working for his dad.” Will Randall Park sing?
