The musical Rent changed the face of musical theater as soon as it hit the stage in 1996, thanks to its modern take on a classic story, as well as a thoroughly modern soundtrack. And the catchy, memorable musical has endured long past its original cast. Years later, tons of TV and movies continue to quote or reference the show.
