Punch Up the Jam Has Finally Made ‘Old Town Road’ 100 Percent Country

It don’t get more country than Johnny Cash, y’all. The Man in Black is more country than muddin’ in a holler, Brittany Cartwright’s beer cheese, or knowing exactly where you were when Dale Earnhardt died. With his late-in-life American recordings, Cash put a country stank on many songs outside the genre, including “Hurt” by Nine Inch Nails. And it was that countryfied version of “Hurt” that Punch Up the Jam’s Demi Adejuyigbe referenced in his remix of Billy Ray Cyrus’s remix of “Old Town Road” — much to the consternation of co-host Miel Bredouw. Surely now Billboard has to reinstate Lil Nas X into the Hall of Country Legends.
