Netflix is about to be in the movie musical business, with Ryan Murphy set to turn Broadway musical The Prom into his first film project as part of his massive deal with the streaming service. Murphy himself made the announcement at a special charity performance of the musical he was hosting on Tuesday night, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The Prom is an original story, which already makes it pretty unique on Broadway, where most shows are based on movies you saw ten years ago. It’s a comedy that follows the story of an Indiana teenager who is banned from bringing her girlfriend to the prom, but then a group of Broadway actors decide to travel to her town to help her. In a post on Instagram, Murphy said it is “one of the most uplifting, heartfelt and special musicals I have ever seen on Broadway.” It’s not clear if Murphy will be directing or just producing this project, and we probably won’t find out much more until some of his many other projects get farther along.
