Chip ’n’ Dale are one step closer to finding all the whys and whos. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Lonely Island’s Akiva Schaffer has signed on to direct a CGI-live-action hybrid feature length Chip ’n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers. The cartoon, which began in 1989, starred one Indiana Jones–looking chipmunk and one Magnum P.I.–looking chipmunk. With their fellow steampunk-looking rodent pals, they solved crimes. A totally normal premise for a cartoon! The film is being produced by David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman, who also produced The Muppets as well as Beauty and the Beast. The script is being written by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, and it won’t be an origin story or a detective-agency story. Chip ’n’ Dale: Just 2 Guyz Who Are Having a Good Time might wind up theatrically released or on Disney+, the company’s new streaming platform.
