The Emmys Might Go Hostless This Year, Too

Given how sluggish last year’s Emmys ceremony was, perhaps some change isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Variety is reporting that, after the success of the Oscars not having a host earlier this year, the Television Academy and Fox are now mulling over the exact same thing. While “nothing has been decided” in an official capacity, a hostless show is “among the leading options” being floated as for-your-consideration season continues to be in full swing. (The last time the Emmys went without a host was back in 2003.) You might recall that the Oscars’ hostless 2019 ceremony was due to a last-ditch result, as opposed to a strategic choice — the original host, Kevin Hart, stepped down a month before the show after old homophobic tweets resurfaced, and the Academy couldn’t find a replacement within that short time frame. Still, it got its best ratings in years, so who’s laughing now?
