Barbie Forced to Choose Birks

C’mon, Barbie, let’s go to the Real World. The trailer for the Greta Gerwig’s Barbie is here, following the release of a teaser trailer out of CinemaCon and a slew of toy ads character posters. There’s been much speculation about what the Barbie movie would actually be like, and while we knew about the multiple sex references, we weren’t expecting an Indigo Girls moment. In the trailer, Barbie and Ken, “boyfriend and girlfriend,” are both ready to go about their nightly plans: attending a fully choreographed dance party with every other Barbie and Ken. Life in Barbie Land is pink and perfect. That is, until Barbie contemplates death, experiences cold, water-less showers, and shares the disturbing revelation that her once arched feet are flat. The only way to fix things? Put on a pair of Arizona Birkenstocks and head to the “Real World.” The trailer also shares the big bad of the film: Will Ferrell as the Mattel CEO desperate to get Barbie back into her box and off the Venice Beach boardwalk. Issa Rae, Hari Nef, America Ferrera, Dua Lipa, Ncuti Gatwa, Simu Liu, Michael Cera, Kate McKinnon, Nicola Coughlan, Ariana Greenblatt, and Alexandra Shipp are among the rest of the primarily Barbie cast. Earlier this year, the first teaser introduced us to Margot Robbie’s original version via a 2001: A Space Odyssey reference, and while this teaser is a little less highbrow, it still confuses like no other. Barbie is out July 21, 2023, and while that is the same date that Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is out, we all know which one will truly set the world on fire.
