The Closest We Might Ever Come to a ‘Calvin and Hobbes’ Movie

“Calvin and Hobbes” creator Bill Watterson, the J.D. Salinger of the comic-strip world, now lives in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, where he reportedly spends his days painting large-canvas landscapes and setting them on fire. Watterson never sold film or television rights to his masterpiece strip; given his legendary antipathy toward licensing of any kind, it seems quite possible he never will. So if you wish for the cartoon hero of your childhood to spring to life, you’ve got two choices: Squint real hard at the pickup truck down the block and imagine that Calvin really is peeing on the Chevy logo, or watch this unauthorized Calvin and Hobbes short, reportedly directed by Italian animator Donato Di Carlo. And watch it soon — it likely won’t be around for long.
