Infinitesimal Light and Magic

Before there was high-def or CGI Beowulf, there was, well, this. In Our Second Date, Jennifer and Kevin McCoy re-create a scene from Jean-Luc Godard’s 1967 film Week End, taking a decidedly low-tech approach. The meticulously crafted miniature rotates at a snail’s pace before a system of snakelike cameras, and, while far from realistic, the projected image is better than you might expect. This piece is part of MoMA’s small but excellent exhibition “Automatic Update,” a fun look at antiquated (i.e. nineties) tech, up on the second floor through September 3. —Rachel Wolff
