Heath Ledger has been found dead in a Broome Street apartment, according to PageSix.com, which also says the death was due to a drug overdose. Ledger will next appear onscreen as the Joker in Batman Begins sequel The Dark Knight and, at the time of his death, he was still completing work on Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.

Update: According to the Times, authorities found Ledger unconscious in bed in an apartment owned by Mary-Kate Olsen, who is currently at Sundance [Ed. note: Olsen’s publicist says it’s not her apartment]. He was reportedly surrounded by pills, and police say signs point to suicide or an accidental overdose.

Update 2: The Times says the pills were both over-the-counter and prescription sleeping pills.
