‘Umbrella’ Watch 2008: Is R. Kelly’s ‘Body Body’ the Song of the Summer?

From now until something displaces last year’s “Umbrella” from the top of our iTunes most-played list, Vulture will be judging the contenders for this year’s Song of the Summer.

Today, MTV’s Website asks experts about R. Kelly’s post-trial career prospects, and most of them agree that if he continues to produce wonderful music — as he always has — his fans will likely stand by him. Based on the strength of his latest single (released on the Internet last week to celebrate the resting of his defense), we don’t suspect he’ll have any problems. “Body Body” is a catchy, summery ode to Kellz’s inexhaustible virility (as usual), enhanced by Auto-Tuned vocals for which T-Pain is, happily, in no way responsible. Something tells us there will be better tracks on Kelly’s upcoming album, 12 Play: Fourth Quarter (supposedly still due next month), but this one’s pretty great. Can it be song of the summer? In our apartment, it already is.
