Sometimes the song of the summer comes from the most unlikely of places. In our months-long search for 2008’s “Umbrella,” we certainly didn’t expect Shaquille O’Neal — Shaq-Fu! — to be a contender. But as Rihanna proved last year, sometimes all you need is a catchy chorus to make a summer hit, and Shaq’s impromptu freestyle in a Manhattan club this weekend has provided the inescapable hook the summer has so far lacked. We have a hunch that all through the hot months, taunting cries of “Tell me how my ass taste!” will be heard in swimming pools, on basketball courts, and on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. This is just the first of what we hope will be innumerable remixes, and it heralds perhaps a new era in open-source hit-making: Shaq provides the hook, and America creates the song of the summer. Hey, big record labels: Tell Shaq how his ass taste!
