‘Nixon’ Does Unthinkable: Makes Tricky Dick Sympathetic

Director Oliver Stone swears his upcoming Dubya biopic will be evenhanded, but for those who doubt his sincerity, revisit Stone’s 1995 drama about another president whose legacy hangs in tatters. Rereleased on DVD in an extended cut, Nixon remains a mournful, surprisingly sympathetic portrait of ambition and ego collapsing into ruinous disgrace. Anthony Hopkins, who may not resemble the man, nonetheless nails Nixon’s twitchy essence in an intense performance. And let’s not forget Joan Allen’s great turn as First Lady Pat Nixon — easily the strongest woman in Stone’s boys’-club oeuvre.
